PORTFOLIO PREP!

Many creative students (and parents) can feel overwhelmed by the audition process for a Regional Arts Program. We are here to help!

Description:

This course is to aid students in preparing for all aspects of their Regional Arts Program audition for Mayfield Secondary School. It includes:

  • A consultation explaining in detail the requirements of the program – in simple language. This takes place on the first class.

  • Supervised studio time to work on both their sketchbook and required pieces;

  • The use of studio tools to produce the required pieces;

  • Direction in photographing artwork and preparing labels as needed;

  • Role-playing practice sessions to prepare for the audition;

Courses are available in a 4 day Summer program - 3 hours per day or an 8 week Fall program, 1.5 hours per week. Each course covers the same material and is a total of 12 hours of instruction.

As students are applying to the visual arts program, it is assumed that they have taken previous art courses to learn the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. They should also have at least basic knowledge of how to use drawing and painting materials. We appreciate too, that some students are self-taught and talented but have not taken previous courses. We understand that with both groups there may be gaps in artistic knowledge and if we see that the entire group can benefit from a refresher on certain art techniques or principles, we will take the time to teach them. If however, your child has no previous art experience, please contact us before registering.

Materials:

Although materials are not provided for this course, please do not purchase materials or portfolios before the first class as advice will be given on what to purchase. We have an optional Portfolio Prep Kit available for purchase. We have designed this package with materials that we feel are useful in preparing the required portfolio pieces. It does not include a portfolio or sketchbook. A sample will be available at the first class.

Expectations:

Please be advised that although this is supervised studio time, students will be required to present and complete their own original artistic works.The ideas, reference materials and execution must all be their own.

This course consists of a total of 12 hours of instruction. How long does it take to produce one piece of art? How many pieces are required for the audition? Doing the math, you will understand that students will not be completing their portfolio during the course. The course is to guide them on producing the rough copies and to organize them to complete all required pieces on time and provide instruction in areas where it is needed.

If you are taking the 8 week fall program, you will be expected to complete portions of your audition portfolio each week at home.

If you are taking the 4-half day summer program, you will only be working on rough copies and are expected to finish the good copies for your portfolio on your own time during the rest of the summer.
