Students are encouraged to show their own personal creative style in their sketchbook activities. Every course has 5 different sketchbook activities. Each student is required to bring a sketchbook to class. The size and type of sketchbook is optional, however white paper, not grey newsprint or yellow manilla paper is recommended. An average sketchbook is 9 x 12", spiral bound with 20-30 pages.
Sketchbooks are also available for purchase from Progressive Art when registering for the art fundamentals program.
When a sketchbook activity says, “colour” anything can be used for colouring (pencil crayon, marker, crayon, watercolour etc). If it says “black & white” it can be done in pencil, charcoal or outlined in black marker.
Only completed sketchbook activities should be turned in for marking. Marking consists of a written comment or verbal encouragement. No numerical marks are given. Feel free to work ahead on your activities although only one activity will be marked each week.
Students are encouraged to spend one hour a week working on their sketchbook. The spirit behind the sketchbook activities is not to add more homework to their schedules. If older students are studying for a test or going through a particularly difficult homework week and cannot complete their activity, they are welcome to turn it in the next week. The activities are designed to get their creative juices flowing, to challenge them to try something new and to show off their natural talent. It also gives the instructor an opportunity to give personal assistance to those looking to improve their drawing skills.
Remember have fun and be creative!
